Do they know how far they\u2019ve come or what actions to take?<\/p>\n<p>Writing down\u00a0goals and presenting them at the yearly kick-off or next company-wide meeting is a good start, but don\u2019t stop there.\u00a0Make\u00a0goals\u00a0visible every day.<\/p>\n<p>Communicate goals clearly and repeat them again. Over communicating is better than under communicating. Because people have so much to do and receive so many messages, it is easy to get distracted.<\/p>\n<p>Even groups that start out\u00a0100% committed to reaching a\u00a0goal, can lose momentum over time and come up short. Getting to the next level isn&#8217;t easy.<\/p>\n<p>People need to see progress as it happens. When they reach a milestone, they need to enjoy success right then and there.<\/p>\n<p>Many B2B companies are using tools like\u00a0CRM systems and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessanalyze.com\/en\/business-analytics-guide\/\">business\u00a0intelligence software<\/a> and dashboards to help them reach goals. These tools do\u00a0the work of measuring progress\u00a0and informing people of events as they happen. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Knowing where you are heading<\/li>\n<li>Understanding what you need to do to get there<\/li>\n<li>Celebrating with colleagues when you arrive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The best performing organisations we work with use the following techniques to reach their goals:<\/p>\n<h3>Make goals visible in real-time (or near real time)<\/h3>\n<p>Goals are\u00a0continuously measured and communicated on dashboards. This applies to ever type of quantifiable goal (as long as you have the underlying data). By using both activity targets\u00a0and result targets (e.g. volume or revenue) you lead people in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0a goal isn&#8217;t\u00a0followed up, it isn&#8217;t worth having. Too many goals\u00a0is\u00a0overload.<\/p>\n<p>Some examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increase number of new customers<\/li>\n<li>Increase inbound requests<\/li>\n<li>Increase upselling or cross selling<\/li>\n<li>Increase sales for a specific segment or product mix<\/li>\n<li>Increase margins<\/li>\n<li>Increase customer satisfaction<\/li>\n<li>Reduce complaints<\/li>\n<li>Increase billable hours or utilization (for example services)<\/li>\n<li>Increase in specific activity (for example telephone calls out, first meeting, proposals sent etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Consider whether you want goals presented at the company, group or personal level. Sales targets, for example, are often cascaded to team and individual level. Managers should see totals and a breakdown per person, category or other parameter. If sales has both an overall revenue budget and a budget per product area, both these can be measured.<\/p>\n<p>Check that each goal has a time horizon. Should you reach it this week, this month or this year? Including a countdown beside the goal, for example, 15 days left, creates a sense of urgency.<\/p>\n<h3>Design dashboards for a good experience<\/h3>\n<p>Good dashboard design helps people see and understand goals without confusion. Radial buttons are an intuitive way to show percent of goal achieved. Set up drill downs so it is possible to identify issues by examining top-level results on a lower level.<\/p>\n<p>A special designed leaderboard, like \u201cBudget Busters,\u201d is a clever way to recognize sales performance. This can be a simple list on the mangers\u2019 dashboard or a\u00a0themed dashboard that is shown on office TV monitors.<\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"https:\/\/ipvision.dk\/da\/om-ipvision\">ipvision<\/a>, a provider of telephone, mobile and network solutions, the\u00a0sales team\u00a0sees a clear view of their month to date performance, what is left to deliver and their earnings. \u201cIn the first month, we exceeded our targets,\u201d says Thomas Pedersen, Product Manager.<\/p>\n<h3>Review\u00a0goal performance\u00a0in\u00a0weekly and\u00a0monthly meetings<\/h3>\n<p>Weekly team meetings are the ideal place to discuss goals and what needs to be done to achieve them.<\/p>\n<p>It may not be appropriate to discuss how any one person is doing, but you can show team goals and use analytic dashboards to find out where there are problems or opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0everyone already knows the status before they go into meetings, no time\u00a0is wasted going through figures.\u00a0The discussion\u00a0will hop to next steps or actions needed.<\/p>\n<h3>Share on the company message board<\/h3>\n<p>A simple\u00a0graph or barometer shared\u00a0in your company chat tool or team messaging tool, can motivate people to go the extra mile.
