What is Embedded BI and how does it differ from traditional BI tools? Embedded BI is an integral part of a business application or process, not necessary a separate application. It is typically a major component of the decision support part of the host application, and in some cases becomes the face of the application for users who only need read access to the data. BI for the Now Embedded BI is focused on helping people understand what is happening right now. Because it is using real-time data, embedded BI leans heavily towards reporting and easy analytics and away from OLAP. Embedded BI acts on real time data, not time delayed data stored in a separate warehouse. A key factor in this is the source of the data - it comes from the application (or uses the same source as the application), not a data warehouse or data mart. BI that Looks and Feels Familiar Embedded BI not only operates on the same dataset as the application it is part of, but it also uses the same look and feel as the application. The user doesn't feel like they are switching applications and doesn't have to learn two separate user interfaces. This helps end users feel more comfortable with the tool set and helps them increase their productivity faster. The People's BI Embedded BI is much more end-user focused than tradition BI. Most BI applications assume a sophisticated user with knowledge of both the BI application and the data set being processed and analyzed. The tools these users interact with are complex and powerful. The end result is a set of static reports that can be pushed into portals and dashboards, which allows other users to access the results. Embedded BI, on the other hand, is designed to be part of an application or business process. It needs to be significantly easier to use without training, and only requires application level knowledge, not data schema knowledge. The end user needs to be able to customize the view of the information they are seeing and create new views and reports, and easily access those new objects.
